Firecracker documented the work of contemporary women photographers internationally for over a decade and funded long-term documentary projects through its own grant. This archive keeps that record readable and sets it beside the photography grants still open to women photographers now.
The primary award
The Firecracker grant and what documentary funding paid for
The grant was established in 2012 to move a single long-term documentary project from unfinished to finished, as a small, self-funded, non-profit award. That is a narrower purpose than it sounds. Documentary work stalls for unglamorous reasons — a last research trip, printing for an exhibition, the fee for an archive's reproduction rights — and those are the costs a completion award covers rather than a general stipend for living expenses.
It was open internationally to female and non-binary photographers, and awarded on the strength of the portfolio and the artist statement submitted with it. Applications were reviewed by an independent panel of specialists drawn from across the industry — curators, editors, commissioners, art buyers and gallerists — with the recipients published rather than kept private, so the award also functioned as an annual visibility exercise.
